The Met x Eichholtz presents the Chair Verplanck — a contemporary interpretation of an 18th-century American settee from The Met collection.
Upholstered in rich red velvet, the chair takes cues from the settee housed in the Verplanck Room, a pre-Revolutionary period room in The Met’s American Wing. With its sculptural silhouette and tailored proportions, it brings a sense of historic refinement into modern interiors.
Historic Provenance
The Chair Verplanck draws inspiration from an American settee made around 1785, part of the original furnishings of the Verplanck Room at The Met. With its high back and low arms, the original was designed for shared seating and quiet conversation—hallmarks of early New York social life. It remains the only known surviving suite of 18th-century New York furniture from the influential Verplanck family.
