George III "Sedan" Wall Clock

(English, ca. 1780–1810)

Ebony and Gilt-Brass

5 ⅝ × 1 ½ inches

A rare and fine example of a Georgian Sedan Clock, designed for use in the private portable chairs of the 18th-century elite. This piece features a luxurious solid ebony case accented by Neoclassical brass rosettes and a hinged brass-and-glass bezel.

The round enamel dial with Roman numerals remains in exceptional condition. The reverse features a secondary door—a characteristic of high-quality early examples—exposing the intricate spring-driven movement. These clocks represent a bridge between 18th-century pocket watches and larger domestic wall clocks, serving as both a functional timepiece and a symbol of status.

Circa 1790.
